Plymouth Place in La Grange Park, Ill. has been awarded a Level 1 Accreditation by The ArbNet Arboretum Accreditation Program and The Morton Arboretum, for achieving particular standards of professional practices deemed important for arboreta and botanic gardens. The ArbNet Arboretum Accreditation Program is the only global initiative to officially recognize arboreta at various levels of development, capacity, and professionalism. Plymouth Place is also now recognized as an accredited arboretum in the Morton Register of Arboreta, a database of the world’s arboreta and gardens dedicated to woody plants.
Established in 1944 as a center for healthy living, Plymouth Place is constantly pursuing excellence and reshaping the senior living experience. One of its many premium amenities is the stunning 17-acre arboretum that surrounds the retirement community.
With over 360 trees representing 36 different species, including Oak, Maple River Birch, Ginkgo and others, the Plymouth Place arboretum stands out as a unique destination. Some of the arboretum’s signature trees include a mature stand of Baldcypress and a Gingko tree estimated to be 100 years old. The arboretum is also home to a heritage garden where residents transplanted perennials to be preserved from recent construction activities and bricks salvaged from the former cottage homes that stood on the property. Plymouth Place is also home to a half-acre roof garden host to numerous shrubs, perennials, and other butterfly friendly plants.
“For years, our residents have inventoried, cared for, and enjoyed the trees and landscape on our property,” said Jay Biere, CEO and President of Plymouth Place. “The horticulture committee is engaged with the community and has a mission to educate, preserve, and grow the arboretum into the special place it has become. Receiving an ArbNet Level 1 accreditation not only adds credibility and value to our overall healthy living mission but also makes the residents proud that their efforts are recognized by an esteemed organization.”
