Are You Acting Like a Teenager?

You know those kids who are always on their devices, taking photos and texting their friends? You might be more like them than you think.

A survey conducted by the National Council on Aging found that seniors are driven by a desire for connectedness. Staying connected to family and friends was top of their list, with 84% of seniors using technology to link with the world around them. The number of seniors who own a smartphone has more than doubled since 2013 and more seniors are using social media sites, like Facebook and Twitter, to get their news and information and to share experiences.

Whether or not technology is a major part of your life, be sure your time online doesn’t become a substitute for experiences beyond your four walls. Just like we keep telling those pesky teenagers, healthy living is about balance.

Try Getting Out More

Being connected to a community is vital to your wellbeing. It builds a sense of belonging and self-esteem to be part of something bigger than yourself. And even if you’re more wallflower than social butterfly, good feelings are easy to come by. Sometimes just sharing a smile or saying ‘hello’ to someone on a walk can spark a positive mood.

La Grange village is just minutes away. Take scheduled transportation into downtown, and visit the eateries, specialty shops and historic places. Strike up a conversation with the interesting people who are part of the daily fabric of life around here.

Green, gorgeous Gordon Park is adjacent to Plymouth Place™. Go for a walk with a friend, or find a spot where you can spend time with family. Its 17 acres of gardens, trails and fitness areas offer pleasant places to exercise and socialize.

Maybe You Noticed?

While our great location and amenities make it easy to be involved outside our community, we also love bringing the neighborhood to you. Here’s a sample of interesting activities we organized in June:

  • Sunflower Project: Residents became “Citizen Scientists” as part of a national environmental project to record the number of bees and other pollinators of sunflowers.
  • Al Capone Lunch: Residents took a trip to downtown Chicago to learn about the life of the infamous mobster.
  • Celebrate Summer Farmer’s Market: Residents met local growers, sampled their product and learned why and how they do what they do.
  • La Grange Park local library: Our regular hands-on helper from the local library teaches Residents how to use iPads and other devices
  • Art Exhibition: Lyons Township High School graduate art student Grace Reilly displayed her photographs and talked to residents about her work.
