The Power of Aquatic Fitness

Dive into Wellness: The Power of Aquatic Fitness

The Fitness and Wellness Team at Plymouth Place has seen firsthand the transformative power of aquatic fitness programs for our residents. From high-intensity aqua fusion classes to gentle arthritis aquatics, these water-based workouts offer a plethora of benefits that cater to the diverse needs of our senior population.

Why Aqua Fitness?

Aquatic exercise is a game-changer for older adults for several reasons. For starters, water provides natural resistance, making workouts more effective without the jarring impact on joints that can be a concern with traditional land-based exercises. This aspect is particularly crucial, as it reduces the risk of injury while still allowing for a challenging workout.

Benefits for everyone.

Aquatic classes are not just for those with existing joint issues; they’re suitable for everyone, regardless of fitness level. From high-intensity aqua fusion classes that get your heart pumping to low-impact aquatics perfect for gentle movement and flexibility, there’s something for everyone in the pool – whether you’re a seasoned gym-goer or someone who’s just starting their fitness journey.

“Low impact aquatics has vastly improved my balance as well as strengthened my core,” said resident Dave Grimes. “The sessions are fun, and I look forward to them.”

Pool at the Center for Health Living at Plymouth Place

The beautiful pool in Plymouth Place’s new Center for Healthy Living is home to the latest aquatic workouts and lap swimming.

The power of variety.

One of the fantastic aspects of aquatic fitness is the sheer variety of classes. At Plymouth Place, we offer everything from aqua boxing, which combines cardio and strength training, to aqua walking, a soothing yet effective way to improve cardiovascular health and endurance. This variety ensures that residents can find a class that not only meets their fitness goals but also keeps them engaged and excited to participate.

“I recently moved to The Arboretum Villas at Plymouth Place to take advantage of the many activities, both physical and mental,” said resident Dave Bryant. “Part of my youth was spent as a Chicago Lifeguard as well as getting beat up trying to box in CYO matches in the ‘50s. Thanks to Stefanie and friends at Plymouth Place, I was urged to join the aquatic boxing group. It’s a great combination of fundamental boxing movements with a touch of aquatic aerobics. So far, so good. I’ve restored some long dormant muscles and skills. I’m no Rocky, but I can imagine he would have loved to prepare for his fights with a physical challenge like this!”

Hot Tub at Plymouth Place

The Center for Healthy Living at Plymouth Place’s also features an expansive hot tub for relaxing with friends and easing muscle and joint pain.

Gentle on the body, tough on calories.

Despite being gentle on the joints, aquatic workouts can pack a powerful punch when it comes to burning calories and building strength. Even low-intensity activities like aqua walking can provide an excellent cardiovascular workout, helping residents improve their heart health and stamina over time. Additionally, the resistance provided by the water ensures that muscles are engaged throughout the entire workout, leading to increased strength and tone.

Aqua fitness for arthritis.

For anyone living with arthritis, aquatic exercise can be a game changer. The buoyancy of water reduces the stress on joints, allowing for increased range of motion and decreased pain during movement. Our arthritis aqua classes focus on gentle, fluid movements designed to improve flexibility and reduce stiffness, helping residents manage their symptoms and maintain an active lifestyle.

Social connection.

Beyond the physical benefits, aquatic fitness classes also provide valuable social opportunities. Fitness instructor Julie Albrecht stated, “Exercising in a group setting fosters a sense of friendship and support, encouraging residents to stay committed to their fitness goals while forming meaningful connections with their peers.” This sense of community is invaluable, contributing to overall health and well-being in addition to the physical benefits of exercise.
