Counting the Costs

When comparing the costs of living at home versus living at a Life Plan Community, make sure you’re comparing apples to apples, as they say. Take stock of your actual monthly expenses so you have a good starting place to make a smart decision.

Monthly costs can add up. Rent or mortgage payments are probably the biggest monthly expense for most people. But even if you’ve paid off your mortgage, you need to take other costs into account as well, including:

  • Utilities (water, gas, electricity)
  • Property taxes
  • Homeowners insurance
  • HOA fees
  • Cable and internet service
  • Trash removal
  • Home security system

Maintenance and repairs can be costly.

Home maintenance alone can take some unexpected chunks out of your budget. In fact, it’s estimated that annual home maintenance costs are between 1% and 3% of the home’s price. For example, a $200,000 house could cost between $2,000 and $6,000 per year in upkeep and replacements. So be sure to think about:

  • Exterior home maintenance (painting, siding, roof or driveway repairs, gutter replacements, etc.)
  • Interior home maintenance (painting, carpet cleaning/replacement, HVAC, appliance repairs, etc.)
  • Lawn care
  • Leaf or snow removal

Don’t forget about lifestyle expenses.

From necessities like groceries to extras like eating out or going to the movies, daily living puts another dent in your wallet.

  • Groceries
  • Dining out
  • Entertainment
  • Club or gym membership fees
    Housekeeping/laundry services
  • Transportation
