Sustainability at Plymouth Place

Rooted in Nature. Committed to the Future.

At Plymouth Place, sustainability is part of everyday life.

Nestled within a beautiful 17-acre accredited arboretum, our campus reflects a commitment to environmental stewardship, wellness, and responsible planning. Through resident-led programs, ecological preservation, and thoughtful campus improvements, we’re creating a community where people and nature thrive together.

An Accredited Arboretum Community

As a participant in The Morton Arboretum’s ArbNet initiative, Plymouth Place is dedicated to preserving and enhancing our campus landscape for future generations.

Residents enjoy:

  • A 17-acre accredited arboretum
  • Mature trees and expansive green spaces
  • Scenic walking paths
  • One of Illinois’ largest Aquascape pond environments
  • Birdwatching, fishing and wildlife viewing opportunities
  • Peaceful outdoor spaces for relaxation and reflection

Over the years, we’ve expanded our tree canopy through thoughtful preservation and planting, creating a diverse environment that supports birds, pollinators and native plant life.

A Campus Designed Around Nature

Nature is woven into everyday life at Plymouth Place.

Sustainability at Plymouth Place is as much about people as it is about the environment. One resident, an avid fisherman for more than 25 years, rediscovered his passion for fishing at the Aquascape after no longer being able to travel to remote wilderness destinations. It’s a reminder that preserving natural spaces can also help people continue the hobbies and experiences they love.

Sustainability in Action

Many of Plymouth Place’s sustainability efforts have grown through collaboration between residents and team members, creating simple, everyday ways to care for the environment.

Composting
What began as a resident-led initiative has grown into a campus-wide composting program supported by Plymouth Place. Residents collect food scraps in their homes and empty them into shared compost bins near the community garden, helping reduce landfill waste and support sustainability.

Recycling
A resident Recycling Committee works alongside Plymouth Place to promote responsible recycling throughout the community through education and information.
The committee also introduced a campus-wide Styrofoam recycling program, and efforts to introduce more sustainable alternatives in dining services.

Building Responsibly

Sustainability also guides how Plymouth Place plans for the future.

Ongoing improvements include:

  • Energy-efficient lighting
  • High-performance windows and insulation
  • Efficient heating and environmental systems
  • Sustainable building materials
  • Long-term stewardship planning that protects the beauty and health of the campus

These investments help reduce environmental impact while creating comfortable, efficient spaces for residents.
