Sustainability at Plymouth Place

Rooted in Nature. Guided by Purpose.

At Plymouth Place, sustainability is part of everyday life. Through environmental stewardship, thoughtful planning and resident-driven initiatives, we are creating a community where people and nature thrive together.

Surrounded by beautifully maintained grounds on a 17-acre arboretum, residents enjoy meaningful connections to nature through outdoor spaces, ecological restoration efforts and experiences designed to support wellness and purposeful living.

An Accredited Arboretum Community

Plymouth Place is proud to participate in The Morton Arboretum’s ArbNet initiative, reflecting our long-term commitment to environmental stewardship, conservation and education.

Over the years, our campus has expanded its tree canopy through thoughtful preservation and planting efforts, creating a diverse landscape designed to support both beauty and biodiversity. Residents, donors and team members have worked together to cultivate an environment that encourages learning, exploration and meaningful connection with nature.

Future plans include educational tree signage, interactive campus maps and resident-led docent opportunities that will allow visitors and residents alike to experience the campus in new and engaging ways.

A Thriving Natural Ecosystem

Nature is woven into everyday life at Plymouth Place. From tree canopies and pollinator-friendly gardens to peaceful walking paths and restored pond habitats, the campus offers opportunities to reconnect with the outdoors in ways that feel calming, inspiring and restorative.

Residents regularly enjoy birdwatching, seasonal wildlife sightings, gardening and time spent exploring the natural beauty surrounding the community. Our restored pond ecosystem, one of the largest Aquascape environments in Illinois, reflects years of thoughtful ecological investment while creating a welcoming setting for relaxation, recreation and reflection.

Stewardship Driven by Residents

Environmental stewardship at Plymouth Place is deeply connected to the people who live here. Residents play an active role in shaping and supporting sustainability efforts across campus through gardening, volunteer initiatives, educational programming and environmental committees.

One resident, an avid fisherman for more than 25 years, recently rediscovered his passion for fishing at the Aquascape after no longer being able to travel to remote wilderness destinations. Experiences like these remind us that caring for the environment also means creating opportunities for people to continue doing what they love.

Connecting Generations Through Nature

Plymouth Place’s campus is a place where residents, families, students and visitors can come together to experience the value of environmental stewardship and lifelong learning.

Future opportunities may include guided nature walks, educational partnerships, pollinator and butterfly programming, resident docent experiences and interactive environmental displays designed to inspire curiosity and connection across generations.
